Vasopneumatic Cryotherapy Wilmington, NC

Vasopneumatic Cryotherapy

Traditionally, the application of cold has been used to reduce pain and swelling after injury or surgery.  Compression has also been shown to reduce swelling in an inflamed joint or muscle.  Combining the use of cold and compression is termed vasopneumatic cryotherapy.  Vasopneumatic cryotherapy is highly effective to reduce pain and swelling in injured muscles and joints.  A sleeve is placed around the injured area and conforms to the body part.  This provides better surface contact and more effective cooling.

The benefits of vasopneumatic cryotherapy include:

  • Vasoconstriction and reduced blood flow
  • Reduced inflammation and swelling
  • Decreased muscle spasm
  • Decreased metabolic demand
  • Pain relief without narcotics

Vasopneumatic cryotherapy is used immediately following acute injury or surgery and later as needed.  This cryotherapy has been shown in research studies to be more effective than the traditional use of cold to reduce swelling and pain, which leads to quicker recovery in physical therapy.

At Shoreline Physical Therapy, we utilize vasopneumatic cryotherapy for several conditions including but not limited to:
