Did You Know October is National Physical Therapy Month?
While many people are gearing up for Halloween festivities this month with pumpkins, costumes, and candy, we’re celebrating a different, less spooky holiday: National Physical Therapy Month!
This month is the perfect time to raise awareness about the benefits of physical therapy and how it can help you keep pain from haunting your everyday life. Whether you’re dealing with a recent injury, nagging aches, or the stiffness that often creeps in with cooler weather, our team at Shoreline Physical Therapy is here to help you move, feel, and live better.
In honor of this month, we want to share a few important ways you can keep your body active, mobile, and pain-free this fall. After all, pain shouldn’t be the thing that gives you a fright this season.

Stay Physically Active – Don’t Let the Cold Weather Slow You Down
As the crisp autumn air settles in, many people find it tempting to cozy up indoors and cut back on physical activity. While rest has its benefits, staying active is one of the best ways to ward off pain and stiffness. Regular movement keeps your muscles and joints warm, flexible, and strong, preventing them from tightening up like a mummy’s wrappings.
Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity each day. This doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym. Brisk walks through the neighborhood, raking leaves, light stretching, yoga, or even dancing in your living room all count. The key is consistency. By making physical activity a part of your daily routine, you can strengthen your body, improve circulation, and reduce the risk of aches sneaking up on you.
Don’t Skip the Stretching
Think of stretching as your body’s defense against the ghosts of injury past. Stretching helps loosen up your muscles, increases blood flow, and improves flexibility—all of which make you less likely to suffer from strains or sprains.
This is especially important as the temperatures drop. Cold muscles are more prone to stiffness and injury, so make stretching a daily ritual. Take a few minutes in the morning to stretch after waking up, before and after exercise, and even before bed. You’ll notice less tension, more mobility, and fewer “tricks” from your muscles.
Treat Pain Early
Many people ignore pain, hoping it will go away on its own. Unfortunately, small aches often grow into bigger problems if left untreated. What may start as a little stiffness in your back, neck, or shoulders can eventually turn into chronic pain that interferes with your favorite activities.
The good news? You don’t have to wait until the problem gets scary. Physical therapy can help address pain early by identifying the root cause, strengthening weak areas, and teaching you strategies to manage discomfort before it becomes overwhelming.
How a Physical Therapist Can Help You
While staying active and stretching are great self-care strategies, nothing compares to the expertise of a licensed physical therapist. At Shoreline Physical Therapy, our therapists work with you to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs, lifestyle, and goals.
Here’s how we can help you stay pain-free this season:
- Targeted exercises to strengthen weak muscles and improve mobility
- Hands-on techniques to reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and restore movement
- Posture and ergonomic training to keep you comfortable at work or during daily activities
- Balance and fall prevention strategies to help you stay steady on your feet
- Education and resources so you know how to care for your body outside the clinic
Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or simply want to keep moving without pain, our team has the tools and knowledge to guide you every step of the way.

Small Lifestyle Tips for a Pain-Free Fall
In addition to physical therapy, here are some simple steps you can take at home to avoid letting pain spook you this season:
- Take breaks. If you’re decorating for Halloween, raking leaves, or carrying heavy bags of candy, pace yourself to avoid overuse injuries.
- Wear supportive shoes. With more fall activities and uneven ground outdoors, proper footwear is essential.
- Stay hydrated. Even in cooler weather, your muscles and joints need plenty of water to stay lubricated.
- Mind your posture. Slouching on the couch or hunching over your desk can creep up on you and lead to neck or back pain.

Try an October “Reset” Before the Winter Holidays
With the weather finally starting to cool off, October is a great time to get back into the habit of physical activity before the holidays kick into gear. Here are some of our favorite ways to get moving in the fall:
- Go for a walk. Now’s the perfect time to take advantage of cooler temperatures. A brisk walk around your neighborhood is also a great way to admire your neighbors’ Halloween decorations.
- Enjoy a game of tag football. Why should the pros have all the fun? Invite your friends over for a friendly skirmish–no tackling required.
- Try a local hiking trail: You aren’t the only one enjoying the cooler weather. Spend a few hours exploring a nearby hiking trail and check out what nature’s doing to prepare for winter.
At Shoreline Physical Therapy, we know things start to get busy at Halloween–but October is the perfect time to squeeze in some fun outdoor activities before things get going!

Exercise of the Month
Calf Raises
Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and your hands resting on a chair or countertop for support. Slowly rise up onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the ground. Hold briefly at the top, then lower back down with control. 3 Sets, 10 Reps. (Materials needed: chair or countertop for balance)

“Had a bi-level laminectomy for my March birthday. The staff at Shoreline came recommended by one of my basketball buddies. Getting a 73-year-old back on the court required an understanding that merely being able to do ADLs was not the goal. Bottom line is the staff challenged and supported me. I’m playing again. Great job by my surgeon and the rehab group.” — Mike F.
