Common Neck Complaints and What They Mean
One minute, you’re working at your desk. The next, you feel a sharp, sudden stiffness in the side of your neck. You’ve just developed a crick in your neck.
This is a common experience, and most of us have dealt with it at one time or another. Because it’s usually temporary, most people don’t think much of it. However, if the discomfort persists (or keeps recurring), it could be a sign of an underlying neck problem.
The same could be said of neck pain in general, which affects millions of people worldwide. Neck pain can range from mild to debilitating. In many cases, it can impact daily activities and overall quality of life.
The trick to resolving your neck discomfort? Figuring out the underlying cause–and that’s something the team at Shoreline Physical Therapy can help with!
Why Does My Neck Hurt? Causes of Neck Pain
One reason neck pain is so prevalent is that several factors can cause it. Depending on the underlying cause, your pain and discomfort manifest in different ways. For example:
Acute Neck Pain
Acute neck pain refers to any neck pain that occurs due to injury. It will resolve when the damage heals.
What Causes Acute Neck Pain?
- Whiplash-related injuries from car accidents, falls, or sports-related trauma.
- Overuse of neck muscles and joints due to repetitive activities, such as holding a phone to your ear.
Chronic Neck Pain
Chronic neck pain refers to any pain that lasts for more than three months, well past the time it would take for an injury to heal. It usually indicates an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed.
What Causes Chronic Neck Pain?
- Sitting or standing with slouched shoulders and a forward head posture puts excessive strain on the neck muscles and joints, leading to long-term pain that will persist if your posture remains impaired.
- Aging-related degeneration in the spine, such as osteoarthritis, can contribute to neck pain and reduced mobility.
- Emotional stress and tension often manifest physically in tight neck muscles, contributing to or intensifying neck pain.
Nerve-Related Neck Pain
If your neck pain or stiffness is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or sharp, shooting pain that radiates from your neck and into your arm, it can indicate a problem with your nerves.
What Causes Nerve-Related Neck Pain?
- A herniated disc in your cervical spine can cause nerve-related symptoms if it presses on a nearby nerve root.
Treating Neck Pain with Physical Therapy
At Shoreline Physical Therapy, we create personalized care plans based on the underlying cause of your neck discomfort. We might incorporate the following techniques:
Manual Therapy
- Hands-on techniques such as therapeutic massage and joint mobilizations can relieve muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain.
Exercises
- Customized exercise programs focus on specific directional movements of the neck and upper back to reduce pain and increase range of motion. Strengthening neck muscles can enhance overall neck stability. These programs can include neck range of motion and stretches, cervical spine mobilizations, and resistance training.
Postural Awareness
- Our PT will assess and correct your posture to alleviate strain on the neck muscles and promote proper alignment no matter what you’re doing throughout the day.
Education and Lifestyle Modifications
- We educate our patients about proper body mechanics, ergonomic principles, stress management techniques, and self-care strategies to prevent future neck problems and promote long-term neck health.
If you experience persistent or severe neck pain, it’s essential to seek professional guidance and evaluation. Early intervention and comprehensive physical therapy can significantly improve neck pain, restore function, and enhance overall well-being.

Treatment Spotlight: Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (McKenzie Method)

At Shoreline Physical Therapy, we offer several drug-free approaches to treating musculoskeletal pain. Today, however, we want to highlight a particularly effective technique: Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), also known as the McKenzie Method.
The McKenzie Method refers to a world-renowned, patient-centered approach focused on assessing your movement, empowering you to self-treat, and restoring your daily function. It can be especially effective for managing both acute and chronic spine and joint conditions.
Three Core Components of the McKenzie Method We Love for Addressing Your Pain
Comprehensive Assessment
- This step involves carefully listening to your symptoms and guiding you through simple, repeated movements. This helps classify your condition, pinpoint your specific pain triggers, and build a targeted treatment plan tailored to your body’s needs.
Patient-Led Treatment
- This phase focuses on empowering you with specific movement strategies and posture adjustments to perform at home throughout the day. Our PTs teach you how to treat your own symptoms, helping rapidly reduce pain and restore mobility in as little as two weeks.
Proactive Prevention
- This final stage equips you with the knowledge, simple exercises, and posture habits needed to minimize the risk of future flare-ups. By learning how your body responds to movement, you gain long-term tools to maintain your progress independently.
These three components can provide rapid relief, empower self-care, and restore full physical function, making them valuable tools in a comprehensive recovery plan.
Our goal is to provide immediate relief and long-term results, and the McKenzie Method is just one tool we use to get there!

Hosting Thanksgiving Dinner? Manage Stress with These Tips
We love Thanksgiving at Shoreline Physical Therapy. It’s a time to gather with friends and family, enjoy a great meal, and give thanks for all of the year’s blessings. But we also know the big day can be stressful—especially if you’re hosting.
Here are a few simple tips to stay happy and healthy this Thanksgiving:
- Don’t forget your post-meal walk. If you prepped dinner, let someone else take care of the dishes while you take a relaxing stroll around the neighborhood. Relax–you earned it!
- Try some deep breathing exercises. In the thick of cooking five different side dishes and feeling overwhelmed? Try box breathing, a simple technique in which you slowly breathe in and out for 3-4 counts.
- Fix a balanced plate. Rather than stressing about overindulging, just make sure to add some green veggies to your plate alongside the cornbread stuffing and fried turkey.

Neck Glide
(Neck)
Stand tall with your shoulders relaxed and your head in a neutral position. Gently draw your head straight backward, keeping your chin level—like you’re trying to make a double chin. Avoid tilting your head up or down. Hold briefly, then return to the starting position.
